teaching
practice

The final demonstration teaching was my most anticipated day, and at the same time, it was the most nerve-wracking because I was about to be evaluated by my cooperating teacher and our coordinator, and it was the day when I could finally apply all my learnings throughout my practicum period.

A night before my final demonstration teaching, I finalized all my technology-based and traditional instructional materials. In addition to that, I also made a module (written in both English and Indonesian) for my students so that during my final teaching, they would be able to follow my discussion. I also translated the texts in my PowerPoint presentation into Indonesian to make it easier for my students to understand our discussion.

At 6:30 AM, I was already in SMP Negeri 1 Kendari since I also needed to prepare the science laboratory, which is the venue. At 8:30 AM, I was about to begin our session when suddenly, the headmaster and one of the members of the Ministry of Education in Kendari City came inside. The nervousness that I was feeling during that time doubled, but I was thankful because I was able to hide it immediately. For my final demonstration teaching, we were also joined by Ma'am Habasiah, my cooperating teacher; Ma'am Wa Ode Ade Sarasmita Uke, our coordinator; her two research friends; and Ma'am Kresensiana Mari, one of our mentors in SMP Negeri 1 Kendari.

The session began by checking the attendance of the students. I checked their attendance by checking the QR codes on their identification card (ID) that we made for them. It was followed by our greetings for each other, an opening prayer, and asking the students to pick up pieces of trash around them. After, I presented to them the house rules. Consequently, we did an energizer where I let them do the clap that I taught them. Here is the clip of the #GiveMeOne clap.

After the energizer, we formally began our discussion about the digestive system with a game called 4 Pics 1 Word. Consequently, our discussion began. During the discussion part, I am not the only one who is talking; rather, I also let my students share their ideas, because I believe that inside the classroom, learning is better if we make it student-centered. After the discussion came the game-based activity using Quizziz. It was followed by individual and group activities. After that, I gave each one of them a sticky note where they needed to write their reflections or learnings about our discussion, and then I let them paste it on the whiteboard. I ended the session by giving them a personal message and thanking them for accepting me as their student teacher for their class.

Here is the the copy of my PowerPoint Presentation for my final demonstration.

B. time management and organizing                  activities

As a person who wants to maximize the time allotted for me inside the classroom, during lesson planning, I already visualize how my whole session will look. Visualizing what my classroom will look like during my actual teaching helps me organize the activities and the materials that I will be using for my class. When it comes to the activities that I will be giving to my students, I put myself in the place of the learners and imagine if I will be able to do that activity for the time period that I set because it is important for me to meet all the objectives in my class so that the students will be able to have a more meaningful learning experience from me.

During my actual teaching inside the class, in order for my students to develop a sense of alertness and consciousness of time, I use timers with background music in order for them to relax and, at the same time, track their own time while they are doing the activity.

c. classroom management

As a student teacher, one of the most difficult aspects that I find hard to achieve is good classroom management. Especially since not all students can understand me speaking in English, I was quite distressed when I was thinking of strategies that I would use for my teaching.

However, during my whole stay in SMP Negeri 1 Kendari, I was able to build a good relationship with my students, which is why during my teaching week, they were very enthusiastic when I taught them the #GiveMeOne Clap, "Ang Galing Galing Mo" Clap, and "Eyes on Me, Eyes on You" attention getter. These simple strategies became my pillar during my actual teaching because whenever my students become noisy or their attention is not with me, I just say these attention-getters.

Classroom management is hard, especially if there is a language barrier. However, what I learned during my stay at SMP Negeri 1 Kendari is that no matter what language you have, as a teacher, if you are able to create a bond with your students, it is easier for you to ask for their active participation and good behavior during your class.

Here is a video of the three attention-getters that I used in my teaching.

d. problem-solving while teaching and            staying in smp negeri 1 kendari

The biggest challenge that I have encountered in SMP Negeri 1 Kendari is the language barrier because not all students and even teachers can converse actively in English. However, I was thankful because there were teachers like Ma'am Kres, Ma'am Fitri, and Ma'am Rahma, who served as my translators for the first week. In addition to that, I did not just solely rely on the teachers who were helping me understand what the others were saying; I also tried to learn some Indonesian words, and with the help of Google Translate, I was able to become more independent when it comes to having conversations with the teachers and students for the remaining days that I stayed in SMP Negeri 1 Kendari.

Another challenge that I encountered was lesson plan making because the sample that my cooperating teacher gave me was written in the Indonesian language. Fortunately, there are already apps that we can use to translate, which is why I was still able to overcome my problem.
